What has been your experience with cell phone companies? Have you noticed how they are extremely friendly and will offer you almost anything if you will just sign that multi-page, fine print contract that ties you up for 2-3 years? Should you ever want or need to break that contract, watch out- there are
huge penalties!
Why do they do that? That’s because the old-fashioned cell phone companies’ payment structure is set up that way. The “authorized dealer” only makes money from the company if he gets you to sign a long service agreement. At best, the dealer will make $50 for getting you to sign that agreement. They will give rebates on the phones, further reducing their profit, just to get you as a customer.
Remember the expression, “There is no such thing as a free lunch”? It‘s the same with cell phones. “Free phones” are misleading… The cost or your "free” phone is actually paid for with your minutes. Check out the fine print in that long, complicated contract that you signed… Either you pay for your free phone with higher rates or with some of the minutes you bought each month. For example, if you signed a 350 minute per month contract. In many cell phone contracts, the last 50 minutes per month pay for the phone. What that means, is that when you reach 300, not 350 minutes of usage, the expensive penalties kick in (where you can pay up to $.65 per minute!) Ouch! For more information about how "free" cell phones aren't really free, click here. The cell phone companies make most of their profit from the service, or minutes you buy each month. That is why they are so persistent on getting you to commit to buying their service for 2-3 years. When your needs change, they are happy to make the necessary changes to your cell phone service, so long as you commit to another lengthy contract. "New Technology Makes No Contract Cell Phone Service Affordable!"Don’t ever expect to see this form the old-fashioned cell phone companies, because their entire revenue model and software are built around the 2-year contract model. They have out-dated software that doesn’t allow them to get real-time data on your minute usage. Their data is often a day or two old. Now there is new, proprietary software, that only a few companies use to give them real-time data on phone usage. That software gives them the freedom to offer affordable, no contract cell phone service. As customers approach their monthly usage limit, they are sent text messages advising them that they are reaching their allotment for the month and that they can add additional minutes or purchase another 30 days of minutes at the same, affordable rate. That can be done online or right on you phone. They now can give you no contract cellphone service at discount prices and you can have the freedom of paying for what you want and need, still maintaining the freedom to change if you ever want to. When the service and prices are excellent, why should a company need you to sign a lengthy contract? That is true Freedom on the go!
