We all are enticed by the alluring ads for family cell phone plans.

You can buy one or two discounted cell phones (or even get them free – click here for cautions about free phones ) and then add other phones for only $10 each per month.

Does it sound too good to be true?

Yes, you can begin cellular family plans relatively inexpensively, but a month or two into the contract you may be in for a nasty surprise…

Most family wireless plans make you begin with an initially high number of minutes, and therefore a high initial monthly cost.

Then you add some phones, you likely will then opt for an even more expensive monthly plan to get more minutes. You cost per phone just increased- each month.

The problem is that you have to guess about how many minutes your family will use.

If you guess too high, then you will be paying a more expensive bill each month than you need.

The Contract is the Rub With Cellular Family Plans – Here’s Why

Remember that to get any family cell phone plans, you will need to sign a lengthy contract.

You are bound by those initial terms and rates.

If you want to adjust your minutes, you will likely need to agree to two more years from that point.

If you family need ever change and you want to add a phone- 2 more years for every phone.

If you ever want to discontinue a phone- there can be a hefty termination fee!

Now, back to your initial estimate of how many minutes a month your family will use.

Probably the best-case scenario is that you will order too many minutes and overpay each month for the life of that contract.

Yes, I said that is the best-case scenario.

Here’s the greater danger- what happens to many folks with family wireless plans.

You go over your allotted amount for the month, then each call from each phone is charged an exurbanite rate- usually around $.40 per minute.

You are slammed with a $1000.00 cellular bill from you teenager texting his friends.

Then you are trapped, you can't make any changes to the plan or discontinue any phone without paying contract change fees and incurring an additional 2 years.

You want to dump that service but can’t without continuing to pay the high rates each month for phones you aren’t using or pay those termination fees for each phone.

Don't Try Policing Your Family Cell Phone Plan

Policing cellular family plans is an exercise in frustration and stress.

Any parent who has tried to do this knows exactly what I mean. If you haven’t tried it- don’t. It’s just not worth the emotional stress and the relationship toll it takes on your family.

It’s actually impossible to monitor exactly your family wireless plan minutes anyways.

Huh?

Yep. That’s right. Have you ever inquired about your minute usage? It gives you a number, but then there is a big disclaimer statement that this many not reflect recent usage.

That’s because the older cell phone giants have old technology and they only have data that is about 2 days old.

They also don’t require credit checks, so these low rates are available to anyone.

This is not a prepaid plan with those high per minute rates and daily access fees.

If you have a teen who just cant’ seem to stop texting, putting them on their own cell phone plan that they are responsible for funding and managing can be a valuable training aid.

You can teach them financial responsibility and how to manage a limited resource. They need these skills before you launch them into the world.

Believe me, that is much better than getting angry and nagging them about their cellular usage.

Unless you have an extremely large family, this is a much better value for anyone with a family of 3-5 people.

Since this company does sell phones at low cost initially, you end up owning your phone outright. While this may represent an initial higher cost, you will be money ahead in a short time and have much more control and flexibility immediately.

How This All Began…

An entrepreneur friend of mine saw a devastating trend in his former business.

As a mortgage lender, he was surprised to learn how many families had bad credit from cell phone bills.
